IRC School Programs

The International Relations Council believes that educating young people about other cultures and assisting them to develop a global perspective is vital. As a result, the IRC devotes a large portion of its resources to programs for school-aged young people.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

 Eliot S. Berkley Award:
Each year the International Relations Council (IRC) awards the Eliot S. Berkley Award to a high school junior or senior in the Kansas City metropolitan region who has shown superior interest and competence in the field of international relations.

Academic WorldQuest:
Academic WorldQuest is a team competition for high school students. Students are challenged on their knowledge of world affairs, geography, history, and current events. The winning team represents Kansas City at the national competition.

Great Decisions:
Great Decisions is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association and is America's longest running public affairs program. This program is a great way to teach high school students about international affairs.

Curriculum on Islam:
The Seattle World Affairs Council’s Global Classroom has developed a program called Beyond Islam: Understanding the Muslim World. This curriculum may be loaded for free use in the class room.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS:

International Classroom Partnership Program (ICPP):
The ICPP is a program which sends international students from several Kansas City area colleges and universities to visit elementary schools in order to share their life and culture with school children.

Culture Kits:
IRC has Culture Kits on China, India, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Sub-Saharan Africa, which are available to classroom teachers. Each IRC Culture Kit includes historical and cultural information and objects that can be touched and explored. Some Kits also include videos and games. Contact the Director of School Programs if you would like to use an IRC Culture Kit in your classroom.

FOR TEACHERS:

Portrait of Turkey Program:
Every year IRC, as a member of the World Affairs Councils of America in conjunction with the Turkish Cultural Foundation, sponsors local teachers on a journey to Turkey in an effort towards bridging East and West as teachers become immersed in the cultural heritage of this nation at a pivotal geographical and cultural crossroads.

FOR EVERYONE:

Global Connections:
IRC's Global Connections provides volunteer speakers who share their international experience and expertise with a wide variety of schools in the Kansas City metro area.
